A good coach should be able to clearly explain how they develop athletes and why. Do they focus on fundamentals? Do they adjust to each athlete's level? Do they care about character and effort, not just results? The answers reveal a lot about the experience your child will have.
What works for a high schooler is not right for a seven-year-old. Quality programs progress athletes appropriately — building fundamentals and coordination in younger kids, and layering in more advanced skill, speed, and strength work as they mature. Beware of one-size-fits-all approaches.
Sport-specific skill is important, but so are speed, agility, and strength — the physical qualities that let a child apply their skills. The strongest programs address the whole athlete, which also helps reduce injury risk and benefits every sport a child plays.
The emotional environment shapes whether your child grows to love their sport — or grows to dread it.
The best program in the world doesn't help if the schedule and location don't work for your family. Consider drive time, session frequency, and cost. Consistency over months matters far more than any single intensive camp.
